Over the past few months, we at The Integrity Coordinator have been quite busy. More and more organizations are getting to work on their whistleblower procedures. The number of reports is also increasing. The law is having an effect!
Free legal and psycho-social help for whistleblowers
From Feb. 1, 2024, whistleblowers can receive free legal aid or mediation. This allows whistleblowers to better enforce their legal protections. This is intended to lower the barrier to reporting. Earlier, the psycho-social assistance pilot had already taken a more structural form.
In March 2024, the House of Whistleblowers published its annual report for 2023. Last year, the House received more inquiries and also more reports from whistleblowers. This is consistent with international trends.
The consultation document for anonymous reporting was published in early April. You can still respond. Naturally, The Integrity Coordinator participated in the consultation.
Whistleblower directive implemented late and incomplete
Recently, the European Commission published a rather critical progress report on the implementation of the European Directive to protect whistleblowers.
Poland and Estonia now also protect whistleblowers
It took a while, but Poland and Estonia have now also implemented the European directive to protect whistleblowers. They were the last member states that had not yet done so.
Julien Assange, whose WikiLeaks provided a platform for whistleblowers, has reached a deal with U.S. authorities, making him a free man. Journalists, however, fear precedent.
